1998 CONFERENCE

Wed., October 11 | Th., October 12 | Fr., October 13 | Sat., October 14 | Poster Presentations

Agenda

The following agenda from the 2000 conference has links to abstracts, bios and contact information for each presenter who submitted this information. This is an excellent resource on programs and experts in cultural competence from around the country (including special guests from Australia).

Conference Format

The first national conference relied primarily on two formats: plenary sessions and concurrent workshops each with 2-5 panelists. Based on recommendations from participants at the 1998 conference, we have expanded the types of conference sessions that will be offered, emphasizing those that offer greater audience participation.

Preconference Intensive Training Sessions (October 11 Only)

Participants attending the 1998 pre-conference intensive training sessions commented on the value of a one-half to full day immersion on clinical, interpretation, and policy issues. The 2000 conference will continue to use this format for a limited number of issues -clinical training, health professions curricula development, organizational cultural diversity, and developing business plans/objectives. (Advanced enrollment - 30 participants per session.)

Main Conference (October 12-14)

Plenary Sessions. The 2000 conference will use general plenary sessions to feature the core conference themes. Sessions will have 1-2 speakers, with ample time for audience Q&A.

Workshops. Two presenters will have 20 minutes each to address a specific cultural competence implementation or policy challenge from their own experience. A moderator will facilitate discussion and problem-solving or strategy-devising with the audience, which will be encouraged to comment on their related experiences, ask questions, and dialogue with the presenters and other participants.

Lectures.
A traditional 20-minute presentation format in a larger lecture hall on topics that lend themselves to reporting or information sharing, e.g. new research, policy updates, overviews of cultural competence issues for newcomers to the issue. Sessions will feature 2-3 presenters or a moderated panel discussion.

Breakthrough Sessions. Informal, moderated roundtable discussions on emerging efforts related to quality health care for culturally diverse populations, with launch questions or challenge topics to prompt dialogue and information sharing.

Resource Center.
The conference will have a large resource center that features invited poster sessions, and exhibits to facilitate information sharing beyond the formal conference sessions. This room will be organized by topical themes into presentation and networking areas. Poster or exhibit presenters will be available at the end of each day for informal discussion with visitors, and small tables and chairs will be available for people to sit down and network.
