1-8. Sifting Through Cultural Competency/ Diversity Training Programs: Trainer And Client Perspectives On Essential Elements And Techniques

The presenters will present views that help participants differentiate "diversity training” and "cultural competence training.” The value and use of both kinds of training will be presented and discussed with workshop participants. Particular emphasis will be given to the unique challenges posed by complex health care organizations and their diverse populations of patients and staff.

As we present different modes and types of training programs, we will examine those techniques that engage and educate those who attend such training. However, we believe the success of training initiatives is the degree to which they influence the organization in its response to diversity issues and the extent to which behavior of staff and patients is truly changed. Different approaches to effecting organizational and personal change are warranted, depending on circumstances and desired outcomes. We will explore a variety of these methods.

In considering both the trainers' and the clients' perspectives, both diversity and cultural competence training pose challenges. Some of the issues to be considered are: what are the organization's policies and practices and how must they be changed? When is classroom training effective and when should there be an educational intervention within an organization? What expectations does the client have of the trainer and vice versa? Even when one has answered these questions, one recognizes the limitations of training by itself. It must be viewed as one tool in a broad set of initiatives.

Participants in the workshop will hear our perspectives as both clients and trainers and take home some new ideas and methods for effective cultural competence and diversity training.
