"Culture and Quality: Joining the Levers"

Mark Smith, MD, MBA President and Chief Executive Officer, The California HealthCare Foundation

Mark D. Smith is President and CEO of the California HealthCare Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to the improvement of health care for Californians. Prior to joining the Foundation, Dr. Smith was Executive Vice President of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. Dr. Smith has written and spoken extensively on managed care, the health care marketplace and a variety of AIDS-related issues. Dr. Smith is a Board-certified internist and a member of the Institute of Medicine. He is a member of the clinical faculty at the University of California at San Francisco and serves as an Attending Physician at Ward 86 (the AIDS clinic) at San Francisco General Hospital. He has served on the Committee on Performance Measurement of the National Committee for Quality, which oversees HEDIS, and the Committee on the National Quality Report on Health Care Delivery of the Institute of Medicine. He has also served on the editorial board of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Smith received his AB in Afro-American Studies from Harvard College; his MD from the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and the MBA in Health Care Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
