Workshop E-5: Managing a multicultural workforce: A roundtable discussionThe goal of roundtable sessions is to explore critical issues and model programs in an interactive, moderated discussion with roundtable participants and the audience. As part of launching the discussion, each invited roundtable participant will be asked to introduce themselves and their program/expertise in short, 15 minute presentations. The moderator will then pose questions to the panelists about successes and challenges in the field, what work needs to be done now and in the future, and brainstorming of recommendations for policymakers and funders. The audience will be invited to share their questions, ideas, and concerns, and ideally, a lively discussion will follow. This session will focus on the many challenges and opportunities that arise in managing a diverse workforce in a health care organization. From the perspective of different kinds of health care organizations, and the expertise of experience managers and consultants, the dialogue will cover many different issues, including:

Bria Chakofsky-Lewy, RN Community House Calls, Seattle, Washington From 1987 to 1990 I managed the International District Community Health Center in Seatttles Chinatown/International District where I first supervised a multicultural staff. I have worked at Harborview Medical Center since 1993, joining the Community House Calls program as a supervisor in 1997. I currently supervise caseworker/cultural mediators and interpreters in Harborview's Interpreter Services Department.
Marilyn Gardner, Program Consultant for the VNA Care Network, Inc., Director, Cross Cultural Health Care, Phoenix, Arizona Marilyn Gardner, RN, Program Consultant for the VNA Care Network, Inc. and Director of Cross Cultural Health Care in Phoenix, Arizona (www.cchealthcare.org), originally founded, developed and managed the Program for Cultural Competency & Minority Health at the VNA Care Network, Inc. A nurse by profession, Marilyn has worked in the field of Cultural Competency for the past four years. Raised in Pakistan, she has lived in Islamabad, Pakistan and Cairo, Egypt. Marilyn worked internationally as a public health nurse for seven years. Marilyn has been a frequent keynote speaker at professional meetings addressing culture and health care. Her latest project has been the adaptation of this cultural competency curriculum Communicating Across Boundaries for a Train the Trainer workshop. She is pursuing her Masters Degree in Cross Cultural Communication at Arizona State University. Cathy Romeo, Program Manager of the Cultural Competency & Minority Health at the VNA Care Network, Inc; has extensive experience in community health education and prevention programs and providing services to diverse communities. Cathys background includes national public speaking, program administration and counseling. She won several national awards as the Director of the federally funded Catch the Hope program. Together with Marilyn Gardner, she has trained over 1,200 health and human service providers in our Communicating Across Boundaries cultural competency curriculum.
Ira SenGupta Executive Director, Cross Cultural Health Care Program, Seattle, WashingtonIra SenGupta, Cross Cultural Health Care Programs Executive Director and past Director of Cultural Competency Programs, has developed and conducted over 2,600 hours of trainings nationally in cross cultural issues for health and social service providers in the past year alone. She conducts major cultural competency institutional assessments and serves as a consultant for the HRSA Managed Care Technical Assistance Center. In this role she has helped teams, departments and large and small organizations develop culturally competent team building and conflict resolution strategies. She has led community-based research projects and is the principal investigator for a national study of best practices for the CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) standards for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health. She has also served on the National Committee for Cultural Competence and the Committee for the Development of Cultural Competence Curriculum and Training Modules for Primary Care Physicians. She is currently serving on the NIH/NCI Cultural Competency in Cancer Centers National Advisory Council.
