Preconference Skills-Building Workshops
Tuesday, September 28, 2004

These three-hour workshops will offer the opportunity to participate in small, intensive training sessions. Workshops will be team-taught by experts from around the country, and participants will learn specific techniques and receive informational materials to use in their own work settings.

A-Workshops will run simultaneously from 9:00am-12:00noon.
B-Workshops
will run simultaneously from 1:30-4:30pm.

Special Preconference Track: Culturally Competent Care for Aging Populations

In the next 25 years, the older minority population 65+ is projected to increase by 217 percent, compared with 81 percent for the older white population, making it imperative for health and social service organizations to provide care in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. This special track of morning and afternoon preconference sessions will focus on a variety of issues and interventions through a combination of presentations, skills building, and interactive participation. (You may choose to attend both of these sessions, one session, or combine one session with one of the other preconference sessions described above.)

Reducing health disparities for ethnically diverse elders:
An overview of the SHARE Innovation Awards and program highlights from Illinois, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania
 
Planning for an aging and increasingly diverse population:
Using the Project 2015 model to shape policy and take action for better services

Workshop B-5: Culturally Competent Care for Aging Populations - Afternoon session (1:30pm-4:30pm)

Healthy Aging Summits for ethnic communities:
A collaborative and culturally appropriate way to deliver preventative health services
 
Uncovering mental health concerns in minority older adults:
Culturally appropriate assessment tools and other strategies for primary care providers
 
Preparing health care providers to discuss palliative and hospice care:
What influences patient choices and how to communicate options
 
Developing personal and organizational cultural competence in home health care:
Strategies for training, support, and management
 

    As with the rest of Diversity Rx, this section is a work in progress and we welcome information on other efforts, programs, and reports that will expand upon the information offered here. Please let us know if you have other examples to include here.
