Welcome to DiversityRx

Delivering quality health care services to ethnically diverse populations is a growing challenge for policymakers, health care administrators and providers, and consumer representatives. An even bigger challenge is finding the information, resources, and technical assistance to design and implement linguistically and culturally appropriate health care programs and policies.

DiversityRx is a clearinghouse of information on how to meet the language and cultural needs of minorities, immigrants, refugees and other diverse populations seeking health care. Here you'll find answers to questions like:

  • how do language and culture impact the way clients use health services
  • who has developed model programs, best practices, training courses, and quality assessments
  • what do civil rights law and other laws say should be done to provide equal access to health care services
  • what's the role of linguistically and culturally appropriate services in assuring quality, improving cost-effectiveness, and responding to managed care regulations and accreditation guidelines?
  •

Getting the most out of Diversity Rx

DiversityRx is organized into different sections to make it easier for you to find your way around. All the major sections are accessible from the navigation bar at the top of each page -- and each section is described in detail below. If you want to get there fast, look at the Table of Contents for a quick tour of everything on the site.

    Essentials

Where you get the basic facts. Why Language and Culture are Important, Demographics, and Glossary tell you the whos, whats, and whys. Experts Speak Out offers opinions from people who matter. And Why Should I Care explains why language and culture are important to you -- the consumer, the administrator, the health professional, and others.

    Models and Practices

The good, the great, and the evolving. From cultural competency to medical interpretation, this section shows you how with descriptions of service delivery programs, training, curricula, assessments, standards of practice, and more. Why start from scratch when you can learn from those who are doing it?

    Policy

Telling people how to do it right. Federal Laws, State Laws, Regulations, and Accreditation Standards show you what the big guys expect. Organizational Policies, Quality of Care, and Costs show you how the other guys do it and what bonuses you'll get for doing it too.

    Legal Issues

How to get the law on your side. Why you'll want to know what Title VI says and how the complaint process works

    Networking

This is where all the goodies are. Hot Links and Sign Up! will get you connected with each other and the experts. Resources and Bibliographies, Research, and Face to Face will tell you what you want to know about everyone and everything. And News and Calendar gives you the latest scoop.

As with the rest of DiversityRx, this section is a work in progress and we welcome information on other efforts, programs, and reports that will expand upon the information offered here. Please let us know if you have other examples to include here.
