California Healthcare Interpreters Association (CHIA)

Committed to setting standards of excellence that ensure equal access to quality medical care for all people by supporting and promoting the healthcare interpreting profession.

Objectives:
Promote the profession of health care interpreters through:

  • Establishing Standards of Practice
  • Adopting a Code of Ethics
  • Creating a Certification Program
  • Sponsoring Internships and Scholarships
  • Advocating for cross-cultural awareness through education of health care professionals
  • Encouraging the development of advanced level training in health care interpretation at institutions of higher education
  • Promoting the networking of institutions that provide Interpretation Services
  • Making recommendations on existing or new policies affecting patients with limited or no English speaking proficiency
