Models & Practices

offers practical information on how to design programs that address linguistic and cultural barriers to health care, based on the past and evolving experiences of individuals and organizations. You can learn about medical interpretation issues such as training, testing, certification, ethics, and roles, as well as information geared towards providers who work with multicultural populations, such as training in the use of interpreters, language education programs, and cultural competency curricula.



Overview:

  Provides a summary of the wide spectrum of strategies available to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers to care, and describes their application in model programs around the country.

Bilingual Interpreter Services:

  Describes model programs that have adopted various strategies to bridge the linguistic/cultural gap, organized by type of health care setting: community health centers, public health agencies, hospitals/medical centers, managed care organizations.

Interpreter Practice:

  Covers many issues related to the emerging medical interpretation profession, from testing and assessment of skills to ethical considerations and standards of practice.

Research and Reports:

  Summarizes key reports, articles, journals, and books, on topics related to cultural competency and bilingual/interpreter services, and includes information on how to obtain copies.

Interpreter Associations:   Introduces you to organizations and associations that help new and experienced medical interpreters further development of their own skills in this new profession.

Coming soon:  

Interpreter Training: Provides an overview of issues to consider in training medical interpreters, describes different types of training approaches, and gives examples of model programs.

Interpreters Conferences: Offers valuable perspective on the development of the interpreter's role in health care by providing overviews and key findings of major conferences and workshops on this subject. Also, gives information on upcoming conferences.

Working with Interpreters: Describes approaches to training health care providers in how to work with interpreters, including information on available tools such as videotapes, instructional guides, and curricula.

Language Education Programs: Provides information on instructional programs specifically designed to enhance the bilingual skills of health care personnel.

Translation: Details proper procedures for translating materials to assure accuracy and appropriateness, pitfalls to watch out for when using and developing written materials, and where to find reliable material that has already been translated.

Cultural Competency Training: Describes programs that address the need for health care institutions to become culturally competent, including training for administrators, providers, and front-line customer service staff.

Cross Cultural Health Programs & Initiatives: Describes ground-breaking cross cultural health programs and initiatives.

Community Action: Provides examples of how communities and consumer groups have come together to form coalitions and advocacy groups that have played a vital role in the development of services for limited English-speaking and culturally diverse populations.
